If you browse the internet, you need a browser (oh, really?!?). Well, sure, you all know that. But do you use the right browser? This page will help you to find the browser that best suits your need, and links directly to a download location so that you can download and install it on your computer right away. This page is updated approx. 4 times a year!

Netscape 6
Netscape was the market leader until a few years ago and now tries to get back some market share with Netscape 6 which has just been released. As far as I can see from the pre-release version, it is fully featured and includes everything the average internet surfer will need. The main advantage over the older versions is the file size. Netscape 6 has become much leaner that earlier versions.

Microsoft Internet Explorer V 4.x/5.x
Microsoft took over market leadership, despite the fact that they don't have the best product. There aren't any advantages over Netscape, and pretty much the same disadvantages (i.e. big file size, system requirements). The main disadvantage, I think, is, that Microsoft doesn't stick to standard HTML, which results in incompatibility of some features with other browsers.

Opera 5.0:
Although not perfect, Opera is a great browser. I have tested the beta version of Opera 5, and was amazed by the speed of the program. If you're looking for a REALLY FAST browser, this is your choice! And there are a couple of other features the competition doesn't have: 128-bit-security, zooming, multiple windows, and a way better context sensitive menu if you click the right mouse button. Further, it does support tables, frames, and Java. The look and feel is a little unusual, but after a while you'll get used to it.
What I regard to be one of the great advantages, however, is it's file size. While the browser is fully featured (all it lacks is an HTML editor like the Netscape Composer or Microsoft's Frontpage), it is only about 2MB in file size, which means you can download it quickly. Also, it runs pretty fast even on older hardware.

Star Office 5.2 OEM:
StarOffice is a complete office suite with a word processor, database, drawing program, address book, spread sheet, and more. It also comes with a fully integrated web browser that can handle frames, tables, and Java! You can open the StarOffice word processor and browse the net at the same time. If you're a webmaster, you can use StarOffice to design web pages (including frame setting pages) and see what they look like right away. If you're looking for a all-in-one solution, this is the one you should go for! And best of all, its FREE for non-commerical AND commercial users!!!
StarOffice 5.2 is available for a range of platforms, including Windows, of course. The Linux version I've tested is very stable, but this goes for just about any Linux program (for more information on Linux please read the review about Lynx; SuSE Linux also includes StarOffice).
Click on the screenshot below to download it, but keep in mind that the file size is rather big (62 MB) - you can also buy a CD-ROM version.

Lynx:
Lynx is COMPLETELY different! It is a text-only browser, and while this may look odd at first sight, it does have some great advantages. It is very small as far as disk space and memory is concerned, and it loads pages very fast. It is even somewhat capable of displaying frames (it will display an index of all frames and you can choose which one you'd like to view). If you want speed at all cost, and if you're not looking for images, then this is the right browser for you. Lynx, however, will only run on Unix platforms. If you click on the screenshot you'll go to the homepage of SuSE, one of the best-known Linux distributions. If you buy SuSE Linux, you will not only get the OS, but tons of software on 5 CDs, including Lynx, Netscape, StarOffice, Applixware, The Gimp, Adabas, HylaFAX, and much, much more! Linux also comes with a boot manager, so you can install it on the same computer as Windows. And Linux is cheap - SuSE is one of the more expensive distributions (because of all the software that is included), but even though it's price is only around US$ 60.00! Alternatively, go to http://linux.corel.com and download the new Corel Linux free of charge.

AOL 2000 / CompuServe 2000:
AOL 2000 and CompuServe 2000 are basicaly the same program. The integrated web browser is more or less MSIE, thus all the features of that browser are available in AOL/CompuServe 2000. In addition to that, there are many features that don't have anything to do with the internet, but rather with AOL or CompuServe respectively.
