THE BLINK
Celebrating 3 Years in Publication!
September 1999 | Internet Edition

A NOTE FROM BILLPRINT
It's offically fall and things are slow. Hey, everybody! Wow, it's hard to believe that we're at the end of September and less than one hundred days from the infamous "Y2K". (Oh, for those that are wondering -- fear not, the main computer for "The Blink" is fully Y2K compliant.) It seems to have been a busy month for us all, including our columnists, so please take the time to reward all their hard work with your comments. Moving on, last month's huge issue was a hit with readers -- most everyone I heard from really enjoyed the two-section format tested last month. This month, things have definitely slowed down on the "I Dream of Jeannie" news front, so two sections weren't needed for this issue. But don't worry, there will definitely be more two-sectioned issues of "The Blink" in the future.

Also enjoyed by readers was the in-depth article on television syndication brought to us by reader Jason Zappolo. His special article definitely answered a lot of readers' questions, and was one of the most popular articles run in a long time. Be on the look-out for future articles about the television industry by Jason in "The Blink" sometime in the future. And if you've got any ideas for future articles for Jason, feel free to e-mail him at JLuvsJ123@aol.com. He'd enjoy hearing from you!

And one final note -- this month marks our final "A Look Back" section of the year. This month's "Look Back" is an important article written by a reader of "The Blink". It's a true story about the dangers of dealing with private memorabilia dealers via the Internet. You'll find out more once you get to the column, but I just want to say that it's a very real example of what can go wrong when doing business online. All readers should take the time to read it.

Well, I'll stop for now so we can get to our articles and features. Welcome to the September issue of "The Blink"!

NOW IT'S BABS' TURN TO SHINE ON "BIOGRAPHY"
Here's some breaking news for you -- it's just been announced that Barbara Eden will be featured on the prestigious "Biography" program on cable channel A&E. Barbara's story will be told as part of "'60s Sweethearts Week" on A&E, which promises to feature the life stories of several other sitcom divas of the 1960s. Here's the important info -- you can see Barbara Eden featured on "Biography" on Monday, October 18 at 9pm ET on A&E. Like all "Biographies", the story will repeat at midnight that same night in case you miss the first showing.

"Biography" is easily one of the most renowned programs on all of cable television. Unlike E! Entertainment Network's sensationalistic "True Hollywood Story", A&E's "Biography" is a respected program with many loyal fans, and those celebrities who have been profiled on "Biography" consider the experience an honor. "Biography" has featured the stories of well-known personalities from all through history, including actors, business leaders, and politicians. Recently, the program aired the life story of Elizabeth Montgomery, which proved to be a huge success with fans of "Bewitched". Barbara Eden's story promises to be equally successful. Her bio will feature in-depth interviews with family members, friends, former cast members, and respected TV industry analysts. It is definitely an event any fan of "I Dream of Jeannie" should look forward to. More information on Babs' profiling can be had through "Biography"'s huge website at www.biography.com. Any comments you have on Barbara's "Biography" are definitely welcome. Feel free to e-mail me at BillPrint@aol.com to share your thoughts.

EPISODE SHOWCASE | By Jeannie III
A different episode, special for some reason, is featured here each month.

Episode 39/"Who Needs a Green-Eyed Jeannie?"/Aired 11.7.66
When Major Tony Nelson tries to sneak out of his house one night for a date, Jeannie pops in and catches him. "Where are we going tonight, Master?"

He mumbles something about visiting his old friend, Charlie Suzy. Jeannie smiles understandingly -- and blinks in a solid jail cell around him. She also prepares a bed for him, indicating that is where he will sleep until all possibility of his date is gone. He won't visit this girl with her around! Roger attempts to save him, and gets sent to the top of the Empire State Building for his trouble. To Tony's utter embarrassment, Dr. Bellows also shows up. He takes a good look, up and down, and says something like, "There's a jail in your living room...you think you will get me to tell General Peterson this story, who will say, 'Are you sure, Doctor?' And I will reply, 'Oh, yes,' and then, when he arrives here...there will be no jail. No thank you, Major Nelson. If you want a jail in your living room, you can have a jail in your living room." Exit Dr. Bellows.

The next morning, Jeannie blinks away the jail and serves Tony breakfast. Major Nelson tries to scold her, but she insists she was right -- he was going to meet a beautiful girl and she was right in stopping him. But a phone call from a Mr. Charlie Suzy changes her mind. Filled with remorse, she apologizes repeatedly and promises never to doubt his word again.

So later, when Roger meets Tony in his office, he is rather surprised to find that Tony isn't angry about missing the dinner with his old buddy. Grinning, he explains to Roger how he pulled the wool over his genie's eyes. His real date was tonight, rather than yesterday. What he did was have an army pal call that morning, pretending to be Charlie Suzy, and upset about missing him. Anthony would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.

That night, Roger dropped by. When he found out that Tony was gone, he greeted Jeannie, saying how he bet Major Nelson was having a real good time, then laughs. She gives him a hard look. Roger realizes his huge mistake and backs away, but she is too quick. He is the second occupant of the famed jail cell. "What do you mean, ho-ho, hee-hee?" she asks suspiciously. "I think I have been tricked!"

Meanwhile, Tony is thoroughly enjoying the results of his hard work. He starts a dinner with his old girlfriend, Joan Sheldon. That is, until the poor girl gets turned into a chimpanzee! "Jeannie!"

Major Nelson comes home and begins to pack furiously, shoving clothes haphazardly into his suitcase. Jeannie finally understands she has gone too far. Piteously, she begs him to stay and agrees to give him the night over again.

Tony gets to relive his much-anticipated date and even improve it a bit. Until, that is, the woman's mobster husband escapes from jail and comes after her! Major Nelson mistakes him for a jealous Jeannie and almost gets himself shot! Of course, Jeannie and Roger found out about the gangsters and she comes to save him. She scares them, with Tony's help, into the waiting arms of the police, and their day ends with a friendly game of checkers.

This episode is very well-written and Joan has some great clothes. But the real reason this deserves to be showcased is it makes you feel things. You get incredibly angry with Jeannie for hampering Major Nelson's love life, but at the same time mad at him for not loving her yet! This might also be attributed to the good character acting of Hayden Rorke, Bill Daily, Larry Hagman and, of course, Barbara Eden. That's all for this month and remember to write me with your suggestions for future showcases!

SEE THEM HERE
Movies and TV shows to catch your favorite "Jeannie" cast members in. The next time you're watching "Jaws 3D" (which is probably all the time, considering it's such a popular movie), look closely at the credits. Our little Barbara Eden is listed as playing a part in the film. You probably won't remember seeing her, though. Common sense dictates rewinding the film and paying close attention to see her, but don't bother doing that -- she doesn't appear anywhere in the film! So, what happened? Was her scene cut out? Was Barbara just a tiny extra in the backround of a scene, just a dot on a TV screen? Or was the graphics generator a fan of "I Dream of Jeannie" who snuck in Barbara's name as a joke?

Well, nobody seems to know. It could, of course, be any one of those things, but the latter two aren't likely. Famous celebrities like Barbara usually don't have to take jobs as extras. And a fun-hating lawyer probably insisted that Barbara's name be taken out of the credits for legal reasons. So most likely, Barbara appeared prominently in a brief scene that was cut from the film before it was released. Why was it cut, you ask? Well, most of the time, scenes are cut from films when they aren't relevant or slow things down. But this whole thing about Babs being cut out is just a theory, after all. If you know the real deal on why Barbara's listed in the credits, please e-mail me at BillPrint@aol.com.

Incidently, it's just as well that Barbara isn't seen in the film -- it was a complete failure at the box office due to its very weak plotline. The only thing that made the film any money at all was the fact that it was one of the few films to be shot in 3D, which was high-tech for the time. There were a few other films shot in 3D during the '70s and '80s, but the craze soon died down. These days it's just remembered as an annoying gimmick.

NICK@NEWS | By Aunt Milama
Hey there and welcome to "Nick@News". There isn't much news this month, so bear with me as I report the limited news going on in Nick at Nite/TV Land in the near future.

* Is September 1969 a milestone in your mind? If so, you must be a die-hard "Brady Bunch" fan! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this show so groovy and far-out that it's still popular to this day, Nick at Nite had a marathon. The show's 30th birthday was celebrated on the network on Sunday, September 26. The event was hosted by Greg Brady himself, Barry Williams. Some of the sitcom's very best episodes were featured as part of this three-hour marathon, beginning at 9pm ET and ending at 12am ET.

* Another show coming to TV Land that is part of a deal with Warner Brothers is the '80s series "Perfect Strangers". All WB shows will be on contract from 2000 - 2004.

* In January, we TV Land fans have a real treat. Just a few months from now, TV Land will begin to air its first original show! This show will be titled "Behind the Shows". It will give in-depth behind-the-scenes information on different shows airing on TV Land. Just for a little preview, "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Honeymooners" are just two of the shows to be profiled on "Behind the Shows". So keep your eyes and ears open and when January comes, don't forget to tune in! This is definitely a special occasion for TV Land.

* Have you ever wondered what some current TV stars think of television shows of the past? Well, now's your chance to find out because October 4th - 29th is TV Land's "Celeb Sked 1999". What is "Celeb Sked"? Simple. From 8pm - 12am ET, seven days a week for 25 days, TV Land will have some TV stars from shows of the present speak about some of their favorite shows of the past. Some of the hosts include cast members from "Spin City", "It's Like, You Know", "The Pretender", "Sports Night", and the very funny "Mike O'Malley Show". Also, two individual hosts will include Leeza Gibbons and Mother Love. Plus, there's much, much more to look forward to! So don't miss it! It starts VERY soon, so don't let it slip your mind!

Well, that's it for now. If you have any comments or questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me. Until next time, TV Land/NAN fans!

INTERNET CONNECTION | By Kentauros Shire
The place for "Jeannie" website links and other Internet-related news. No site review this month, nor is there much activity on the Internet in regards to "Jeannie" lately. Neither of the two largest sites has done anything all summer, so maybe this fall will see a spurt of work in them. Alternately, a few of the smaller sites are adding images every now and then, so I will point you in their direction now. :-)

Tidbits and Links
* If you want to keep abreast of where Barbara Eden is on Cable TV, go to the TV-NOW SITE at http://www.tv-now.com/stars/bareden.html. It collects together all the shows and movies she appears in each month.

* The Japanese site dedicated to "Jeannie" at http://www2.famille.ne.jp/~choko-h/jeannie/jeannie.html seems to have added a few images I had not seen lately, and a few I have seen up for auction on eBay. You will have to e-mail the owner to get the user name and password to get into the gallery, but it is well worth the effort. Still, the entire site is in Japanese, and I have not found a way to translate it, even with the translation feature at Alta Vista. The owner is very nice, even if he (?) claims he does not speak English very well (I think he knows English well enough, as you will see upon contacting him). :-)

* For those of you out there that are mostly interested in seeing more images of Barbara and of Jeannie, here are a few sites that offer a good selection. Be warned that one is a pay adult site (not as bad as it sounds). One of the sites listed below I have mentioned before, but it is worth mentioning again. Here they are:

http://www.snails-archives.com/snail/main.htm
http://stormcat.simplenet.com/barbara1.htm
http://members.tripod.com/~ZaneWR/

One site I had mentioned before, http://www.yoda.com/~bobfeg/eden/test, is now gone. I do not know if the owner killed it, if it was killed by the server, or both. Thus, a very large collection of high-quality captures from "I Dream of Jeannie" is gone. If you saved them, you might want to either set up your own page with those captures, or offer them to others without the video-capturing capabilities. :-)

* You can collect images (as well as bid and buy them) on eBay. There have been some really nice (and unusual) items available there, such as a Rona Barrett gossip magazine with plenty of different promos of "Jeannie", several copies of the 1966 "Jeannie" paperback book and the "Jeannie" comics, as well as more cels from the 1973 "Jeannie" cartoon. Some very good bargains can be had by checking every week or so and bidding. Or, you can at least get yourself some really nice scans of the items for free. eBay is at www.ebay.com, and the search criteria I use most of the time are: jeannie, jeanie, genie, "Barbara Eden", as well as just eden. The quotes around Barbara's full name will ensure that the search engine searches only for both names together.

* And here are some pics of a more unusual nature: http://www.flatoday.com/space/weekly/w061696.htm

* If you are interested in software, there isn't much, but there are a couple of items worth mentioning:

First is a place where you can download the coloring books offered originally with one of the "Jeannie" toy sets. The programs are fine for kids (or fans), but not all pictures can be printed out. And I have yet to figure out how to capture the images for saving outside the program. If anyone can do this, I would appreciate corresponding with you for the images. Anyway, the site can be accessed at http://www.kidsdomain.com/down/pc/DJcoloringp1.html.

If you are interested in desktop themes, here is one for "IDOJ" that is pretty good. The animated cursors are neat, but I have replaced most of the sounds with my own samples, so you might want to do the same if you want higher sound quality. You can download it at any of these sites: http://www2.chinabyte.com/staticpages/software/software_download/DEDEMO/softwa re_download_10291_DEDEMO.html

http://ectco.com/Theme-Central/TV_Series/TV_HO/I_Dream_Of_Jeannie_TV_series .htm

http://www.themez.com/TV3.shtml

* And, finally, if you want to find some of the stuff I present to you here, try some of these searches. I like to use Dogpile for most of my searches, and I will list a few from it:

http://rover.dogpile.com/texis/search?q=%22i+dream+of+jeannie%22&fs=web&ss=f tp&to=thirty

http://buck.dogpile.com/texis/search?q=%22Barbara+Eden%22&fs=web&ss=use&to=s ixty

http://senghor.dogpile.com/texis/search?q=jeannie+%2Bbottle&fs=web&to=thirty

And from HotBot:
http://www.hotbot.com/?MT=%22I+Dream+of+Jeannie%22&SM=B&DC=100&BT=L

Well, that's all for this time. Have fun lookin' all the goodies, eh! :-)

A LOOK BACK...
The following article ran for the first time more than a year ago in the July issue of "The Blink". It generated a huge amount of feedback from readers, and is easily one of the most important articles ever run in the history of the newsletter. It's a completely true story by a reader of "The Blink" about her nightmarish experience with an online memorabilia dealer.

Predictably, I received quite a few letters from honest online memorabilia dealers angry with the article. And I expect many more such letters this time around from a new generation of dealers. However, let me state that this article is not meant to condemn doing business online or turn readers against it. Rather, it was originally printed and is being rerun to let readers know what happens when things do indeed go wrong. Of course, the names have been changed to protect all parties involved to avoid any costly legalities. Enjoy!

RISKY BUSINESS | By Jane Doe
I am writing this article because a lot of people buy and sell on the Internet. This is my experience with doing business on the Internet that opened my eyes.

I had a 1964 Jim Beam bottle, aka "Jeannie Bottle". I wanted to have the bottle painted to look like the bottle on the show. I heard there were people who paint Jim Beam bottles to look like Jeannie bottles for money. After contacting a few of them, I decided to go with a certain painter, John Parks. We agreed on the terms, so I sent the bottle to him for painting. I felt that we made a good deal and John said it was good for him also.

The job was supposed to take only about six weeks, and there was to be frequent contact during that time to advise on the status of the bottle. I did not hear anything for a while, but didn't worry since I had gotten references from some of John's past customers. At the end of the agreed-upon six weeks, I still had heard nothing and hadn't received the bottle back. I contacted John and asked how everything was going. I was assured that all was well, and that things were taking a little longer than expected due to poor weather. That was fine, as long as I knew what was going on.

Another month passed, and I still hadn't received the bottle. I contacted John again, and was told that everything was fine and that it was almost finished. Yet another month went by, and that time I was told that the bottle had "bubbled" and the job had to be started again.

The following month, John told me that he was having some personal problems, and told me that it was going to be awhile before the bottle would be finished. He said the situation at home had to be dealt with prior to completing the bottle. Again, I understood. That's the way life is; you never know what's going to happen next. I didn't want to bother John since I knew of his situation at home. I tried to be patient and wait, but after another few months of hearing nothing, I became concerned. I tried to reach John, and when I did, I was again told that everything was fine, and the bottle would be completed very soon.

At this point, six months had passed. I tried to remain patient, but it was becoming harder. I did not know this person, except through the computer. I had friends and family telling me that something was wrong and that I should do something before it was too late. I guess I trust people too much and again, I gave it another month, hoping that the bottle would arrive and that would be the end of it. But, that didn't happen. I tried to e-mail John, but the mail would not go through because his account had been closed. This is when I really became concerned. I tried to be patient and I decided to give the person the benefit of the doubt. I decided that I would write him a letter and send it certified to have proof it was received. I received the signed card back, but still did not hear anything. I decided to give it some more time. It had now been almost eight months since the bottle was sent even though I had been told the whole thing would be completed in less than two months.

I waited for about two months after sending the letter, and still, no response. I was left with no choice, I had to contact small claims court. I hated to have to resort to that. I felt bad about it, even though this person seemed to have written me off completely. I just couldn't overlook the fact that I hadn't been contacted and that my attempts to contact John went un-answered.

I did finally get the bottle back at the courthouse, and it does look nice. But those last ten months were really nerve-wracking. I didn't know if I was ever going to get the bottle back, and if I hadn't gone to court, I don't think I would have ever gotten it back. Although this did have a happy ending, it opened my eyes to doing business on the Internet. There are honest, professional people out there and there are dishonest people out there. Take it from me, know who you are dealing with! Even with references, you have to watch out or you may find yourself doing business with Jeannie's evil twin!

NINETEEN SIXTY-NINE
September of 1969 marked the start of the fifth season of "I Dream of Jeannie" on NBC. No major changes greeted the show at the start of the season, but little did fans know that the 1969 season would be "I Dream of Jeannie"'s last. Here are the episodes that aired thirty years ago this month:

Episode 114/"Jeannie at the Piano"/9.16.69
Jeannie accidently causes Doctor Bellows to believe Tony is an amazing piano player. Of course, Tony isn't.

Episode 115/"Djinn-Djinn, the Pied Piper"/9.23.69
Our little Aunt Milama sends Djinn-Djinn, a dog with magic powers, to visit Jeannie. Chaos ensues when the cute little dog visits the local pound.

Episode 116/"Guess Who's Going to be a Bride, Part I"/9.30.69
Jeannie's Uncle Sully, king of the little country Besenji, visits Jeannie and manages to mess up an important meeting of Tony's. The episode ends with Jeannie's famous words, "Goodbye Master...forever!" Will Jeannie ever return?

Here's some real-word events that occured in September of 1969:

9.1.69/Revolution!
The entire Libyan government is overthrown by a powerful and violent rebel group. The group establishes its own government, a special council, to replace the king.

9.3.69/Death.
North Vietnamese president Ho Chi Minh dies of a heart attack at age 79. The country is quick to establish Ho Chi Minh City in his honor.

9.16.69/More R-E-L-I-E-F from N-I-X-O-N.
President Nixon declares his plans to remove an additional 35,000 U.S. troops from Vietnam by Christmas of 1969. The news, of course, givess hope to worried wives around the country.

9.18.69/Severe penalties.
After two days of out-of-control, deadly rioting for labor-related reasons, martial law is enforced in Argentina to restore order. This is the second type riot to occur in Argentina in 1969.

9.29.69/Heroes.
Neil Armstrong, Ed Aldrin, and Michael Collins, astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, leave on a goodwill tour around the world. On their list of places to visit are twenty-two major countries.

WORTH QUOTING
"Nothing is too good for our boys in the service!"
-Sammy Davis Jr., as himself, in an episode of "I Dream of Jeannie"
